Drive2theFuture aims to prepare “drivers”, travellers and vehicle operators of the future to accept and use connected, cooperative and automated transport modes and the industry of these technologies to understand and meet their needs and wants. To achieve this, it models the behaviour of different automated vehicle “drivers” & prognoses acceptance for several automated driving scenarios, develops specialized training tools (3D automated scenarios for VR-goggles, web applications and social media platforms), content, optimized HMI for “driver”-vehicle handovers, CEA and MCA studies for selection of most favourable automated functions realisation and then demonstrates them in 12 Pilots across Europe, and in 3 major events. Pilots will cover all automated transportation modes (Automated car, PTW, truck, bus, minibus, rail, workboat and drones).
The project will last 3 years, has begun in May 2019 and will last until April 2022.

FILL IN THE AV CONSUMER SURVEY! An online survey is ongoing aiming to explore consumer preferences on Automation. The survey is addressing all users in order to collect their opinions and acceptance regarding Autonomous Vehicles for the different transport modes.Everyone can participate!
It is structured in a modular way, per transport domain (aviation, maritime, rail and road) and is available in 18 languages.
You can reach the survey through the following link.
The first Drive2theFuture Workshop was held last 6th of March, 2020, at the VIAS Institute, in Brussels.
The meeting had more than 40 participants (physically and online) who gave very useful insights for the project. First, Drive2theFuture was introduced to all participants, followed by presentation of other projects with which Drive2theFuture has many synergies: PAsCAL, SUaAVE and Trustonomy. Cooperation between all those projects will enhance deeper knowledge on Autonomous Vehicles.
Secondly, the attendants could participate in the prioritization of Drive2theFuture Use Cases and KPIs to be used for the project Impact Assessment, which will be a key issue on evaluation the different Drive2theFuture pilots. Participation was highly interactive, as the participants’ main priorities were surveyed in real time with the opportunity to discuss them. Finally, in the last interactive session on AV Acceptance Risk Assessment, the participants had the opportunity to rank a list of Technical, Operational, Legal and Behavioural risks as well as propose more to be taken into account.
The Pilots of the project Within Drive2theFuture, 12 pilots are planned, in 8 European countries, covering all modes of transport and involving all user and stakeholder categories. The pilots are organized in three phases, each with a specific target:• Phase I: Setting the scene,
• Phase II: Iterative testing of demonstrators,
• Phase III: Training and wide-scale demonstrations
During the first year of the project, Phase I pilots have already been initiated in the respective pilot sites, while Phase II is planned for the second year and Phase III towards the end of the project for the final evaluation.
3 PLENARY MEETINGS CELEBRATED
The Drive2theFuture project kick-off meeting took place on 9-10 May 2019 in CERTH/HIT premises in Thessaloniki, Greece. 45 participants, representing the 31 partners of the project attended the meeting.
During the two days of the meeting, the aims, plans and implementation objectives of all project WorkPackages and Activities were presented by the respective leaders, in a series of interactive sessions with lively discussion and active participation of all attendantsThe 2nd Plenary Meeting was held in Karlsruhe, hosted by FZI on 28-29 November 2019. Work progress of the project was reported by WP and Activity leaders and discussed, planning also for the next activities to be implemented. On 4-5 March 2020, VIAS institute in Brussels hosted the 3rd Drive2theFuture Plenary Meeting. During the 2 days, the project Consortium discussed on the project’s progress and the status of each Work package, as well as their expected contributions for the next period. On Day 2, the 1st meeting of the Drive2theFuture International Advisory Board (IAB) also took place, where the IAB members met with Drive2theFuture WP leaders and Coordination Team and discussed on the project and their roles and contributions. Last 4th and 5th of march, 2020, the VIAS institute of Brussels hosted the 3rd Drive to the Future Plenary Meeting.
During those 2 days, all project partners were updated on project’s progress and the status of each Work package. The meeting was very useful for the project, as it enhances interaction between partners, feedback from colleagues on the tasks done and results obtained. Also, it helps in planning the next activities and support the sharing of knowledge among attendants.
4 NEW PROJECTS ON THE EUROPEAN HORIZON OF THE AUTONOMOUS DRIVING
Under the Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Programme, the European Commission has recently funded 4 new projects focused on driver behaviour and acceptance of connected, cooperative and automated transport: Drive2TheFuture, PAsCAL, SUaaVE, Trustonomy. These projects share some common topics to investigate on such as the assessment of public acceptance of autonomous driving; the analysis of the driver behaviour under different scenarios; the human/machine interconnections, and last – but absolutely not least – the investigation of ethical and legal issues associated with drivers of autonomous vehicles.Drive2TheFuture, PAsCAL, SUaaVE and Trustonomy are ready to work together in the next years for pushing forward the autonomous driving! Stay tuned!
